How your Oboe / Clarinet is made

African Blackwood

The wood which we use for our instruments
 

We receive billets of wood

We receive square billets of blackwood. These are stored for many years to season.
 

We turn the billets

We work the billets to their final shape through several stages allowing the wood to rest in between.
 

The latest body and tonehole structure design is loaded

The instrument bodies are set-out by a CNC mill, having been designed on a computer.
 

The body is made on a CNC mill

This shows a clarinet joint being made according the the computers instructions.
 

The keys are made

The instruments keys are all hand-made.
 

The keys are fitted

The keys are hand-fitted to each instrument to ensure they fit precisely between the pillars.
 

The keys are plated

The instrument is completely dismantled, and the keys and pillars are plated with silver-plate.
 

The Instrument is ready for assembly

This shows all of the components laid out ready for assembly.
 

The Instrument is assembled

All the pads, corks and springs are fitted.
 

The Instrument is ready for testing

The instrument is tested and tuned, and final adjustments are made.
